The cost of a hair transplant can vary depending on various factors. The first and obvious one is how bald are you? Do you have a receded hairline or have you lost all your frontal hair? The second factor is the hairline design. Are you interested in lowering your hairline or are you comfortable with an M shaped receded look? Finally, how much hair do you have in your donor area? Remember, one thing is what kind of hair transplant you desire and another is how much can we reasonably harvest without deteriorating your donor area so hairloss degree by itself is not a determining factor.
Let's look at the first factor; the degree of hairloss. The hamilton-norwood scale is what we commonly use to describe the stages of baldness and it goes from class I to class VII. Generally speaking if your hairloss is limited to the frontal area such as a class III you are in pretty good shape since most times this area can be restored in one session; however, if your crown area is also involved then you may need two or more sessions.
The second factor is the hairline design which should consider two things. The first is the height of your frontal hairline. If it comes down too low your face may seem too coarse or even brutish. If the hairline stays up to high your face may seem elongated and with little or no difference in your appearance.
The third factor is donor capacity. Remember no one can donate hair to you and no laboratory can produce it yet so ideally someone should take a look at the back of your head with a loupe before giving you a price quote. This examination is called densitometry and consists of counting the amount of hair that you have per cm2 in your nape and the extension of your donor area.
In the context of all this information you may have realized a precise quote is very difficult without a consultation; however, let’s take a look at an average case.
A typical first time patient can donate about 2200 grafts per session. A session of these characteristics can cost anywhere from 2000 to 5000 usd in México and Turkey and 8000 to 20000 dollars in the US and Canada and some other parts of Europe. This obviously depends on the country and the exchange rate but also on the technique used. That's right, there are two basic techniques, one yields more grafts but creates a linear scar in the back of your head while the other yields less but offers more discreet scarring at least after one or two sessions but we´ll talk about that in our next post where we compare the FUE technique and the FUT procedure.
